Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Aman,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to complain about the frequent noise coming from your apartment. I am Nav from apartment number eight. I have been living in this building for two years. I have not faced any such problem before.
However, I recently started to get a lot of noise from your apartment, especially at night. I am a part-time student, and I only get time at night for my studies, but the noise creates a distraction every time I try to concentrate.
This issue is very serious for me because I have to wake up early in the morning for my office, and due to the noise, I hardly sleep at night. It is disturbing my sleep cycle and significantly affecting my health and studies.
I would really appreciate it if you could take serious measures to minimize the noise. I would like to suggest using headphones instead of a speaker to listen to the music. Moreover, you can install a noise-isolation device at your home to cope with the issue.
Thank you so much for your cooperation. I hope you will take accountability and work for the betterment.
Yours sincerely,
Nav

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the situation regarding the noise, explain the negative impact on your studies and sleep, and provide two specific, actionable solutions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour—polite yet firm. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have maintained a consistent and relevant focus throughout the text, ensuring the reader understands the gravity of the situation without being overly aggressive. The response is well-structured and meets all the requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph serving a clear purpose. You use appropriate paragraphing to separate the introduction, the problem, the impact, and the proposed solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'due to' are used effectively to link ideas and sentences. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the identification of the problem to its consequences and finally to potential resolutions. The flow is natural, and the referencing is clear throughout the text, making the letter very easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is appropriate for the context of a formal complaint. Phrases like 'take serious measures', 'significantly affecting', and 'take accountability' show a good command of language. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items to reach the highest band. There are no spelling errors, and the word choice is consistently precise, ensuring that your message is conveyed clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your grammar is generally accurate, with very few slips. For instance, 'I have been living in this building for two years' and 'I would really appreciate it if you could take serious measures' are grammatically sound. There is a high level of control over punctuation and sentence construction. While the structures are mostly error-free, a wider variety of more complex grammatical forms could be utilized to demonstrate greater flexibility. Overall, the writing is clear, and errors do not impede communication.
