Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr Sharma,

I am writing to bring to your attention an issue regarding noise coming from you apartment peticularly in the night hours.

For past few days, I noticed high music sound coming from your apartments. Apart from this, when you walk on the floor I can hear your foot steps and because of that I'm not able to rest properly.

I am doing the afternoon shift and after coming home from job around 10 p.m., I wanted to sleep well but because of the noise coming from your apartment creats resistance to my sleep and I am not to rest which affect my on work next day.

I would appriciate if you could put mate on the floor which reduce the foot step noise in my room. I would grately appriciate if you could play music at moderate sound so it will not asffect my sleep.

I hope you understand my concern and resolve this issue at your earliest convenience.

Yours sincerely,

Jignesh Kanani

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work and rest, and proposing a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands the nature of the problem and the desired outcome. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific times the noise occurs or the nature of the music, which would further develop the ideas and make the request more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'because of that' to link ideas. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by minor grammatical errors and slightly repetitive sentence structures. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a smoother progression between sentences, and ensure that referencing (e.g., 'the issue') is consistently clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully conveying your message. There are some spelling errors, such as 'peticularly', 'appriciate', and 'grately', which are noticeable but do not impede communication. You use some functional vocabulary like 'at your earliest convenience' and 'bring to your attention'. To improve, focus on accuracy in spelling and attempt to use more precise collocations, such as 'excessive noise' instead of 'high music sound' or 'impacts my performance' instead of 'affect my on work'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'For past few days' (missing article), 'creats resistance' (subject-verb agreement), and 'I am not to rest' (missing verb). These errors occur frequently but do not prevent the reader from understanding your intent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Proofreading for these small, recurring errors will significantly enhance the accuracy of your writing.
