Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well, I am writing to acknowledge some issues we are facing currently due to the noise coming from your apartment.

As a neighbour we appreciate your profession and we have respect for that, but from past 2 months its been difficult for us to tolerate such loud noises coming from you place. Me and my partner both have fast-paced working hours which demands a 8 hour good sleep. Unfortunetly our sleep cycle has been disturbed due to which we feel fatigued all day. My school going girl is having trouble in sleeping because of high pitched drums and loud guitar sound.

I would appreciate if you could reschedule your music activities only for daytime and you should also consider to use soundproof door and window covers. If convenient there is a vacant apartment on last floor it is the only apartment on floor so you will freely continue your activities without any disturbance.

If you will consider my advices it will be beneficial for both parties. I am waiting for your kind solution for this issue.

Yours Faithfully.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response covers all three bullet points required by the task: describing the noise, explaining the impact, and suggesting solutions. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although the opening 'Dear Sir or Madam' is slightly formal for a neighbourly dispute. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, providing sufficient detail regarding the nature of the noise (drums and guitar) and the specific impact on the family's sleep and well-being. The suggestions provided are practical and directly address the problem. The letter is well-structured and maintains a consistent focus on the task requirements throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction of the issue to the personal impact and finally to potential solutions. Cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunetly', 'If convenient', and 'If you will consider' are used to link sentences and ideas. However, there are minor issues with punctuation and sentence structure that occasionally make the flow feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different stages of the letter, which helps the reader follow the argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their concerns clearly. Phrases like 'fast-paced working hours', 'disturbed', and 'fatigued' are used effectively. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'from past 2 months' (should be 'for the past two months') and 'my school going girl' (should be 'my school-age daughter'). While the range is sufficient to convey the message, it lacks the more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions that would elevate the score to a higher band. The vocabulary is generally accurate enough to avoid any confusion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you are doing well, I am writing...' (comma splice), 'its been' (missing apostrophe), and 'you should also consider to use' (should be 'consider using'). Additionally, there are minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'on last floor' and 'on floor'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter, and the mistakes do not impede communication. The control over basic grammar is generally good, but more attention to sentence boundaries and verb patterns would improve the accuracy.
