Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Ms. Shah,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter as I am experiencing continuous loud sounds from your apartment. I wanted to address this issue with you.
Over the past few weeks, I have been enduring noises coming from your house late at night. I have heard loud footsteps, furniture being moved, and loud music playing at night. The noise is usually continuous past midnight, which makes it harder for me to fall asleep.
This has become a serious problem as I have to wake up early in the morning for work. Because of a lack of sleep, I feel tired all day and find it hard to concentrate on the tasks I am assigned to do.
I completely understand that everyone has a different lifestyle, but I would appreciate it if you keep the volume to a minimum during late evening. You can lower the music after 10 pm. Also, you could place a rug so that footsteps will not be heard.
Thank you for understanding my situation. Hope you will do something that benefits both of us.
Yours sincerely,
Dipali Mistry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the situation regarding the noise, explain the negative impact on your sleep and work performance, and provide practical solutions such as lowering music volume and using rugs. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully covered all requirements of the prompt in a coherent and logical manner.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Over the past few weeks', 'Because of', and 'Also' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the suggested solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points, making the text easy to navigate.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for this task. Phrases like 'enduring noises', 'continuous loud sounds', and 'lifestyle' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it is mostly standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated expressions to describe the disturbance. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively without any errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. For instance, 'I am writing this letter as I am experiencing...' and 'I would appreciate it if you keep...' are well-constructed. There is a minor slip in 'tasks I am assigned to do' (the 'to' is redundant), but this does not affect clarity. You show good control over verb tenses and sentence punctuation, which makes the writing easy to read and professional in tone.
