• suggest a solution.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to express my dissatisfaction regarding the noise that is coming from your apartment.

To begin with, as I work from home and generally have meetings with the clients and my manager so I prefer silence or low noise so that I can focus on my work and do it efficiently without any problem. However, the loud voices from the music from your apartment do not allow me to do it.

At the same time, I do realize the fact that you are a musician and as one you have to keep working on it and have to listen to it to make it work. But, it would be really beneficial for both of us if you just either lower the volume or try to do it in the working when I will be done with my work or do not have those calls.

Please let me know what you think about my suggestion. I will eagerly wait for your response.

Thank you,

Sam

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact on your work is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, although the opening 'Dear Sir' is slightly impersonal for a neighbourly context. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, though the development could be slightly more sophisticated. For instance, the explanation of why the noise is a problem is clear, but the proposed solution could be more specific regarding times. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the problem description and finally the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'However', and 'At the same time' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is easy to follow. The letter maintains a consistent focus throughout, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of the communication without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for clear communication. You use some functional phrases like 'express my dissatisfaction' and 'eagerly wait for your response'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are minor issues with word choice, such as 'do it in the working' which is slightly unnatural. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise collocations related to noise complaints or professional work environments. The current range is sufficient to convey your meaning without any impediment to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'meetings with the clients and my manager so I prefer' (a run-on structure) and 'do it in the working' (incorrect prepositional phrase). There are also minor issues with article usage and phrasing, such as 'the loud voices from the music'. Despite these errors, the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring subject-verb agreement would improve your score.
