Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Inderpreet,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to explain some noise problem coming from upstairs at night As you know, I recently give birth to a new baby. She hardly gets settled during daytime because of renovation going on in your apartment. From past two days, the contractor and his teams coming for night time work. It is disturbing the baby and I hardly get any rest. I would really appreciate if you could ask them to shift their schedule to morning hours please. I want to mention about my situation as well that I have the surgery during delivery and it is taking time to recover me.
My family is going to visit back home in few weeks and then our apartment would be empty. Then, it is totally fine to continue your construction work anytime. But could you please help us this time. We were neighbours for this many years and also our families have known each other from so long. It never happened before.
Thank you for your understanding.
Best regards,
Amanjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your baby and your recovery, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a neighbourly request. However, the development of ideas is slightly uneven; while the personal situation is clear, the explanation of the noise could be more precise. The letter successfully conveys the urgency of the situation and maintains a polite, conciliatory tone throughout, which is essential for this task type.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Ideas flow reasonably well from the problem to the proposed solution. You use some cohesive devices like 'As you know' and 'But could you please', though the transition between the baby's situation and your own recovery is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is present, but the letter would benefit from a more distinct separation between the description of the problem and the proposed solution to improve readability.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'renovation', 'contractor', and 'appreciate'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'recover me' instead of 'recover' and 'visit back home' which is slightly informal. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. Using more specific collocations related to noise or construction would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'I recently give birth' (should be 'gave'), 'From past two days' (should be 'For the past two days'), and 'I have the surgery' (should be 'I had surgery'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing full stops between sentences. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
