Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear John,
I am writing this letter to talk about a problem I am facing due to noise from your apartment.
I have been living in this apartment for 3 years, and you guys shifted here 3 months ago. All of you are bachelor's students and pursuing your college degree. After college time, every day noise is bothering from your apartment due to the high-volume speakers and loud cheering from your side. Additionally, your door is open at night, which brings more noise outside.
I have a job from very early morning, so it would be difficult for me to get enough sleep due to noise. Ultimately, it affects my work productivity and efficiency at work.
I would be happy, if you could lower your speaker volume at night and also close your main door at night, so noise will not come outside.
I am looking forward to your response.
Kind regards,
Hardik

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint to a neighbour. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the noise; for instance, mentioning specific times or the frequency of the disturbances would provide more depth. However, all requirements of the task are met, and the purpose of the letter is clear throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Additionally' and 'so', to link ideas. However, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words. For example, the transition between the description of the noise and the impact on your work is a bit abrupt. Overall, the structure is easy to follow, and the paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'productivity', 'efficiency', and 'pursuing'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'shifted here' (moved in) and 'noise is bothering from your apartment' (the noise is coming from your apartment). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocations. Using more varied and natural expressions would help elevate your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'every day noise is bothering' (the noise is bothersome/disturbing) and 'so noise will not come outside' (so the noise will not carry/travel). Punctuation is generally correct, although there is an unnecessary comma in 'I would be happy, if you could'. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the grammar does not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of your request.
