Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Neighbour,

I hope you're doing well, As a tanent living in apartment downstairs, I wanted to address a concern which has been lately bothering me, as my apartment is really small and I live in downstairs floor right across from your window. I wanted to inform that I hear lot of noise at night from your room which is directly across my window, As it disturbs me while I'm studying I hear lot of noises and I couldn't concentrate on my study session. I would really appreciate if you can lower the volume or if you have guests over night, you can ask them to be little quiter and close the window so the noise doesn't directly bothers me.

I really hope you understand my situation and I look forward to hear from you soon.

Warm Regards,

Shruti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the problem, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is 11 words under the 150-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the ideas are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped due to the brevity. To improve, you should expand on the impact of the noise—perhaps by mentioning specific times or the nature of your studies—and provide a more detailed or polite suggestion to ensure the tone remains appropriate for a neighbourly request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction to the problem and finally the proposed solution. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained within a single paragraph, which makes it harder to follow. The use of cohesive devices is limited and somewhat repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'I wanted to' and 'I hear'. To reach a higher band, you should use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition') and ensure clear paragraph breaks between the different points of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic terms like 'really small', 'lot of noise', and 'bothering me'. There are also minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'tanent' (tenant) and 'quiter' (quieter). To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and precise adjectives that convey the severity of the situation without sounding overly aggressive. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you express your needs more clearly and professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For example, 'I live in downstairs floor' should be 'I live on the floor below' or 'the downstairs apartment'. There are also punctuation issues, such as comma splices ('I hope you're doing well, As a tanent...'). While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of control over basic sentence construction and article usage prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
