Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr.Patel,
I hope you are doing well. I am your neighbour from downstairs aprtmnet and writing to bring your attention to a noise problem caused by your house.
Firstly, a loud music coming out from house often bothers me to concentrate on my studies and to sleep at night; this issue directly affects my efficiency due to poor sleeping.
As a result, this has caused significant inconveniance to my educational goals, and these exams are very crucial as I am in the final year of my Master degree.
Furthermore, I would appreciate it if you could use your music system at lower volume while keeping your windows closed. This could assist me to solve this issue.
Thank you for attention and consideration for the issue. I look forward to your prompt response.
Your sincerely,
Smit Surti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your studies, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is 137 words, which is below the 150-word minimum requirement. This under-length significantly impacts the development of your ideas, as the points are addressed quite briefly. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the details—for example, by describing specific times the noise occurs or elaborating on the nature of your upcoming exams. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, but the lack of sufficient length prevents a more comprehensive development of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'As a result', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. While the progression is clear, the paragraphing is slightly disjointed due to the brevity of the sentences. To improve, ensure that each paragraph contains a fully developed thought. The use of referencing is generally clear, though the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect the sentences more fluidly rather than relying on simple transitions.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'efficiency', 'inconvenience', and 'consideration'. However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'aprtmnet' and 'inconveniance', which slightly detract from the professional tone. You also have some minor collocation issues, such as 'loud music coming out from house' (should be 'coming from your apartment'). To achieve a higher score, focus on using more precise vocabulary and ensuring accurate spelling of common words. The range is sufficient to communicate your message, but it lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I would appreciate it if you could use your music system at lower volume'. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'I am your neighbour from downstairs aprtmnet' (missing article 'the') and 'Thank you for attention' (missing possessive 'your'). Additionally, 'Master degree' should be 'Master's degree'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a need for more careful proofreading. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help improve your score in this area.
