Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Joy,

I am writing this letter to let you know that I am facing some issue with your movement in apartment. I would like to suggest you something for that as well.

From last few weeks, I am getting to much of noise from your room. It might be because of you are doing something at your home which cause voice disturbance to me. May be you are doing some fitness activity in your apartment.

I am at college during day time. However, at night I do my homework and study after my classes. During this time I am getting disturb due to activity you do at your place. These days my final exams are ongoing so I need to be focused on my study.

Could you please change your time to do that kind for activities at your house? It would be greatly appreciated if you can make it out.

Thank you for your consideration.

Your faithfully,

Gautam Vaddoriya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining why it is a problem, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear. However, the development of ideas is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of the noise is speculative ('May be you are doing some fitness activity'), and the solution is quite vague ('change your time'). To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the nature of the noise and propose a more concrete, polite compromise.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, body, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition 'However, at night' is used correctly, but the overall flow relies on simple sentence structures rather than a variety of linking words. Referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing feels slightly repetitive. Improving the variety of transition signals would enhance the flow of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks range and precision. You use basic terms like 'issue', 'noise', and 'activity' repeatedly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'getting to much of noise' (should be 'too much noise') and 'make it out' (which is not the correct idiom for reaching an agreement). To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to living situations, such as 'disturbing', 'incessant', 'consideration', or 'compromise'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'I am facing some issue' (should be 'an issue'), 'From last few weeks' (should be 'For the last few weeks'), and 'cause voice disturbance' (should be 'causes noise disturbance'). Additionally, there are issues with verb tense and article usage. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
