Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear John,

I am writing this email to express disappointment regarding the late night noises coming from your apartment. I have been living in this building from past five years as of now. I work as a construction site manager in the downtown Surrey and often work for 12hours a shift. Last night, when I came back from an overtime shift, I encountered a loud noise bursting out from the speakers of your unit. I couldn't sleep eventually and had to call the next day off.

To elaborate, my job requires excessive physical and mental labour, as a result, I need to sleep for at least 8 hours in order to fulfill the demands of the job. Till the date, I have taken 3 leaves to catch up on sleep due to the loud noise in the night. Hence, it has impacted my career and mental peace now.

I suggest using various noise cancelling devices like headphones and airpods as a solution to this issue. I understand your love for music and have utmost respect for it. However, I would really appreciate if you can cooperate in this regard.

Thankfully,

James

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the situation clearly, explained the negative impact on your work and health, and provided a reasonable solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a balance between firmness and politeness. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the task. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are fully consistent with the requested format; while 'Thankfully' is understandable, 'Yours sincerely' or 'Best regards' would be more conventional in this context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is logically organized into three distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the solution. You use cohesive devices such as 'To elaborate', 'as a result', and 'However' effectively to link your sentences. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is sufficient. The flow is natural, and the reader can easily follow your argument without any confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for the task, such as 'excessive physical and mental labour', 'impacted my career', and 'utmost respect'. There are a few minor collocation issues, such as 'from past five years' (should be 'for the past five years') and 'call the next day off' (usually 'take the next day off'). However, these do not impede communication. You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning with precision and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I have been living in this building from past five years' (preposition error) and 'Till the date' (should be 'To date'). Additionally, '12hours a shift' lacks proper spacing. Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. The punctuation is generally accurate, and the grammatical errors do not cause any difficulty for the reader.
