Student answer (Band 6.0)

Hi John,

I hope you are doing well. I want to inform you regarding the noise came from your apartment during night till mid night. This noise makes me uncomfortable for whole night.

Last night, I came home after doing long hours shift and I was badly tired. But, as I came home I heard too much noise came from your apartment and it seems like you are drilling in the wall. I know you are renovating your apartment, but if you renovation work from morning till late evening it will be more better rather than late night.

However, I have to leave home early by 5 o’clock as I have to drive 2 hours to reach my work place as I am doing dual one of my colleague shifts as well. Therefore, I get tired alot when I reach back home. Last week, I thought youre renovation work will finish but its seems its not done.

Moreover, I will suggest you that you can do your pending work on weekends as I am not at home on weekends. As a good neighbour I am requesting you for all this.

Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining why it is problematic, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm request. The ideas are relevant and clearly developed, such as explaining your work schedule and the specific nature of the noise (drilling). To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your personal circumstances and the request is even more explicitly linked to the neighbour's actions to create a more persuasive argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to a proposed solution. Paragraphing is used, though the structure could be improved by separating the explanation of the problem from the proposed solution more clearly. You use some cohesive devices like 'However' and 'Moreover', but these are sometimes used slightly inaccurately or in a way that feels a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring they are used to connect ideas more fluidly would enhance the overall flow of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'renovating your apartment' and 'pending work' are appropriate. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'more better' (which is grammatically redundant) and 'get tired alot' (which is informal and contains a spelling error). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding informal phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more descriptive adjectives or specific terms related to noise or construction would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'noise came from' (should be 'noise coming from'), 'its seems its not done' (should be 'it seems it is not done'), and 'youre renovation' (should be 'your'). Additionally, there are issues with verb tenses and articles. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proofreading for basic punctuation errors would significantly improve your accuracy.
