Student answer (Band 6.5)
DEAR XYZ,
I HOPE YOU ARE DOING WELL. I AM WRITING THIS LETTER TO INFORM YOU THAT RECENTLY THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH NOISE COMING FROM YOUR APARTMENT.
SINCE LAST WEEK, THERE HAS BEEN SO MUCH NOISE COMING FROM YOUR APARTMENT, SUCH AS HIGH MUSIC AND FURNITURE SHIFTING, PARTICULARLY LATE AT NIGHT AFTER 10:00 PM, CAUSING ME TO SLEEP LESS.
UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE AN EXAM NEXT WEEK, AND I HAVE BEEN PREPARING FOR IT FOR THE LAST TWO MONTHS. WHENEVER I TRY TO STUDY, THE LOUD NOISES MAKE ME DISTRACTED, CAUSING ME TO FOCUS LESS ON THE STUDY, AND I ALSO FEEL EXHAUSTED IN THE MORNING.
I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT IF YOU COULD LOWER THE NOISE AFTER 10:00 PM. AND KEEP THE MUSIC LEVEL DOWN. THIS WILL BE A REALLY HELP, AND I WILL PAY MORE ATTENTION TO MY STUDY.
I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND MY SITUATION AND THAT WE CAN RESOLVE THE MATTER SOON.
KIND REGARDS,
ARPAN

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact on your studies is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of the communication. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the noise or provide more detail on how the proposed solution would benefit both parties, which would further develop the ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'unfortunately' and 'whenever' to link your thoughts. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally repetitive. To improve, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to connect sentences more fluidly, such as 'consequently,' 'furthermore,' or 'in light of this,' which would make the flow of the letter feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'distracted,' 'exhausted,' and 'resolve the matter.' However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are some minor collocation issues, such as 'high music' (should be 'loud music') and 'make me distracted' (should be 'distract me'). To improve, focus on learning more natural collocations and synonyms to avoid repeating words like 'noise' and 'study' multiple times. Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives would also enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'this will be a really help' (should be 'a real help') and 'focus less on the study' (should be 'focus on my studies'). Additionally, the use of capitalization for the entire body of the letter is inappropriate for formal or semi-formal correspondence. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and article usage. Ensure you use standard sentence case, as the current format is distracting and affects the overall presentation of your writing.
