You live in a small apartment building. You are frequently bothered by noise from your upstairs neighbour's apartment.

• suggest a solution.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear navpreet,

I am writing you a letter regarding continuous disturbance given to me by you because of loud noise in your apartment. My exams were held two days ago, and a night before my exam there was a loud noise coming from your side which made me totally distracted from what I was studying. I gave you couple phone calls but you didn’t respond which was quite unexpected behaviour from you. As a result, I don’t fail the exam but my marks are quite low. Ultimately, I want to give you a solution to make our lives better from now onwards. Just shoot me a text and take permission when there is any party or gathering. Thanks for your understanding.

You’re neighbour,

Neha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your studies, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is significantly under the 150-word minimum requirement, which limits the development of your ideas. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the description of the noise (e.g., what kind of sounds, how often) and provide more detail regarding the impact. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, though it could be slightly more polite given the sensitive nature of the request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is short and lacks clear paragraphing, which makes the structure feel somewhat compressed. While there is a logical progression from the problem to the solution, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited. Phrases like 'As a result' and 'Ultimately' are used correctly, but the overall flow would benefit from more varied linking words to connect your ideas more smoothly. To improve, ensure you use clear paragraph breaks to separate the introduction, the body of the complaint, and the proposed solution.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is functional and conveys the message clearly, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher bands. You rely on basic phrasing such as 'loud noise' and 'give you a solution'. There are also some minor collocation issues, such as 'continuous disturbance given to me by you', which sounds unnatural. Using more precise vocabulary would enhance the professional yet friendly tone of the letter. Focus on incorporating more descriptive adjectives and idiomatic expressions suitable for formal or semi-formal correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that affect the accuracy of your writing. For example, 'My exams were held two days ago' is acceptable, but 'I don’t fail the exam but my marks are quite low' contains a tense error (should be 'didn't fail'). Additionally, 'take permission' is slightly unnatural; 'ask for permission' would be better. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency of the text.
