Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear ________,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing in order to raise a concern regarding frequent loud noises coming from your apartment, which cause disturbance for our kids as they study.

Currently my children have their mid term exams due to which they study in the afternoon and midnight in order to avoid any disturbances, but we hear loud music coming out from your apartment which makes it difficult for our children to focus on their study materials.

It will be greatly appreciated if you can lower the sound of your music system during the afternoon from 1PM to 3 PM and put a stop on music by 10 PM, as it will help our children to concentrate on their exams and meanwhile you can also enjoy your music during the day. I hope you'll understand and also wish that we cross our paths soon.

Yours sincerely,

Pallavi

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact on your children's studies is explained, and a clear, reasonable solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite and constructive stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific nature of the noise or the duration of the problem to further enhance the development of your ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'in order to', 'due to which', and 'as it will help', which contribute to the flow of the text. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The use of paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'raise a concern', 'greatly appreciated', and 'concentrate on their exams' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, it is somewhat standard. To improve, you could incorporate more precise or less common collocations to show a wider range of lexical control. For example, instead of 'put a stop on music', you could use 'refrain from playing loud music'. The spelling and word choice are generally accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For instance, the sentence 'It will be greatly appreciated if you can lower the sound...' shows good control of a complex structure. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'study in the afternoon and midnight' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'late at night' would be better) and 'cross our paths' (the idiom is usually 'cross paths'). However, these errors do not impede communication. The punctuation is generally correct, and the overall grammatical control is solid for this task.
