Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Rakesh,
I hope you are doing well. My name is Nitin and I am recently moved to your building. I am writing this letter to let you know that I am living in an apartment which is situated exactly below your unit and I am facing lot of disturbance due to the noise coming from upstairs. My exams are near and currently I am preparing for it however I am not able to focus due to this unpleasant sound coming from your house.
Moreover, I am doing work from home nowadays and I have lot of business meetings on a regular basis and this noise is disrupting my work as well.
I hope you understand my situation and do something about it. I think you should contact the building management and install thick mat which might help reduce this sound underneath.
Thank you for your time to read my message.
Sincerely,
Nitin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, the development of the ideas could be slightly more detailed; for instance, describing the nature of the noise (e.g., loud music, heavy footsteps) would add more depth to the situation. However, the response successfully fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the description of the problem from the proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'however' are used to link ideas, although the flow could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. The progression of ideas is clear, and the reader can easily follow the writer's intent throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their message clearly. Phrases like 'facing lot of disturbance' and 'disrupting my work' are functional. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'I am recently moved' (should be 'I have recently moved') and 'thick mat' (which sounds slightly unnatural in this context). Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more precise descriptive terms would enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am recently moved' instead of 'I have recently moved', and 'I have lot of business meetings' (missing the article 'a'). Additionally, 'preparing for it' lacks a clear antecedent for 'it'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on verb tenses and article usage to ensure greater accuracy in their writing.
