Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that the noise from your suite is getting worse, which disturbs my work and day-to-day activities as well. I understand your situation of having children and a pet but constant noise has become quite difficult for me to deal with.

In particular, I can often hear children running and jumping, listening loud music and your dog barking at night. As i work from home, I need quite environment to concentrate on my work and attend meetings during the day. Moreover, the noise sometimes continue until midnight, making it difficult for me to sleep properly.

I would really appreciate it if you could ask your children to avoid running indoors and keep the volume of the music down, especially in the evening. Perhaps you could also take your dog outside regularly to reduce its barking.

I hope you understand my situation and that we can find a solution that works for both of us.

Kind regards,

Hemali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the situation regarding the noise, explain the impact on your work and sleep, and provide reasonable suggestions for a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. You have fully met the requirements of the task by covering all parts of the prompt in a logical and relevant manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organized with a clear structure. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'In particular', 'Moreover', and 'I would really appreciate it if' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the problem description to the specific impact and finally to the proposed solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'day-to-day activities', 'concentrate on my work', and 'find a solution that works for both of us' are natural and appropriate. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies, such as 'quite environment' (should be 'quiet') and 'listening loud music' (should be 'listening to loud music'). While these errors do not impede communication, using a slightly wider range of more precise vocabulary would elevate the score. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and grammatically correct. There are a few minor errors, such as 'the noise sometimes continue' (should be 'continues') and the lowercase 'i' in 'As i work'. Additionally, 'listening loud music' is a slight grammatical slip. Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good, and the meaning is never in doubt. You have used a variety of structures that allow for a smooth flow of information.
