Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear John,

I hope you are doing well. I would like to bring to your notice regarding the noise came from your apartment. I know renovation is going on in your apartment but late evening construction noise bothered me too much.

Last night when I came home, after doing long shift of 12 hours I was extremely tried. As soon as I went to sleep after some time I heard a bang seems someone broke into my home, but actually it is loud noise came from you apartment feels like someone hitting hard thing in walls.

However, I have to wake up early in the morning, after it I have drive almost for 2 hours to reach to work. Nowadays, I have to cover my colleague shift too due to which I am so much exhausted as I reach home.

I would like to suggest you a solution that you can start your apartment renovation early morning till evening. Furthermore, even on weekends I am not at home so, you can to your pending task on weekends as well.

I hope you will consider my request.

Thankyou

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, though it leans slightly towards being overly direct. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat limited by grammatical errors that occasionally obscure the intended meaning. For example, the explanation of the noise is a bit repetitive. To improve, ensure that the explanation of the problem is more clearly linked to the impact on your daily life, and provide a more polite, persuasive tone to ensure the neighbour is likely to cooperate.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the narrative. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally inaccurate. For instance, the transition 'However' is used incorrectly at the start of the third paragraph, as it does not contrast with the previous sentence. Additionally, some sentences are linked poorly, such as 'after it I have drive almost for 2 hours'. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'as a result') would significantly enhance the flow and coherence of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message, but it is somewhat basic and contains several errors in word choice and collocation. Phrases like 'noise came from your apartment' and 'hitting hard thing in walls' are unnatural. There are also minor errors in word forms, such as 'extremely tried' instead of 'extremely tired'. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider range of vocabulary related to the context of living arrangements and noise complaints, such as 'disruption', 'incessant', or 'considerate'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede readability. Common issues include tense inconsistencies ('noise came' instead of 'noise coming'), missing articles, and awkward phrasing ('you can to your pending task'). While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the writing from reaching a higher band. Focus on subject-verb agreement, correct verb tenses, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed accurately to avoid confusion.
