Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Rita,
I hope you are doing good, I am writing this to bring your attention on the situation I have been facing since I moved in this apartment .I know you would not be doing anything intentionally to bother me but there are frequent noises coming from upstairs and that makes very difficult for me to concentrate on my work and studies
I need a bit of less noisy environment around me when I am in the meetings because it interrupts other people and it. also makes difficult for for other people to understand me.
Other than that when I am studying there are noises of running from upstairs for continues 2-3 hours . I don't know who might be running either it's your kids or dog but can you please take care of them and let them know that they should not run.
In the evening time there are lot of children playing in garden you can take your children and dog for a walk and play for 2 hours so that there is no noise
I hope you can understand my situation and help me get through with this like wise if you also have some solution for me I am happy to contribute.please let me know
Thanks
Nancy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter covers all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact is explained, and a solution is proposed. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, though it occasionally veers into being slightly demanding rather than polite. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat repetitive, particularly regarding the noise from the children and the dog. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on refining the tone to be more diplomatic and ensuring that the explanation of the problem is more concise and clearly structured.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the impact of the noise and the suggested solution is abrupt. There is a reliance on simple sentence structures, and the flow between ideas could be improved by using a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition'). The referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure feels a bit disjointed in places.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. The student uses basic phrases like 'doing good' and 'noises of running'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'bring your attention on' instead of 'bring to your attention' and 'bit of less noisy' instead of 'a quieter environment'. While the meaning is always clear, the range of vocabulary is limited to common, everyday words. To improve, the student should incorporate more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for a formal or semi-formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include 'I am writing this to bring your attention on the situation I have been facing since I moved in this apartment' (missing preposition 'to'), 'makes very difficult for me' (missing subject 'it'), and 'for continues 2-3 hours' (incorrect word form). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and incorrect spacing. While these errors do not prevent communication, they are frequent enough to lower the score. More attention to subject-verb agreement and preposition usage is needed.
