Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Alexa,

I am writing this letter to make humble request about noise which comes everyday night from your apartment.

As you aware, I am living on 6th floor and right above mine, it is your apartment. For the past three months, I have experienced loud music and shouting from your house specially at mid night . This is so frustrating for me and my partner.

After coming from work, I like to study for my competitive exam followed by dinner but due to this disturbance I am unable to concentrate on that. In addition to that ,my husband having difficulty with sleep because of constant noise. Ultimately , It is bothering us in our daily life which creates negative impact on our mental health.

I would like to make a suggestion for this, hope you understand. If possible please keep the volume down after evening. However it is your house , but please be mindful of neighbour.

I hope you will get my point . I will wait for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Priya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your studies and sleep, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly developed, providing sufficient detail to justify your request. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are consistent; you used 'Dear Alexa' but signed off with 'Yours faithfully', which is typically reserved for formal letters where the recipient's name is unknown. Using 'Yours sincerely' would be more appropriate here.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with each focusing on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'In addition to that' and 'Ultimately', which help the flow of ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with punctuation around these devices (e.g., missing spaces after commas). The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the proposed solution. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring consistent paragraph structure will further enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'competitive exam' and 'mindful of neighbour' are relevant to the context. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'make humble request' (should be 'make a humble request') and 'everyday night' (should be 'every night'). Additionally, 'specially at mid night' is slightly unnatural; 'particularly around midnight' would be more precise. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic expressions or precise collocations would help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as missing articles ('on 6th floor' should be 'on the 6th floor'), subject-verb agreement issues ('my husband having difficulty' should be 'my husband has difficulty'), and punctuation errors (spacing after commas). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for articles, verb tenses, and basic punctuation will significantly improve your accuracy.
