Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Mr Ben

Good-day. I am writing this letter because of the constant noise that is coming from your flat that is right above mine which has lasted for almost a week now.

The sound is usually starts around 6pm in the evening in the evening and it sounds like a chairs are being dragged across the floor. I get home from work around that time and I have noticed it on several occasions.

After a busy day at work, I usually anticipate coming home to have a quiet rest but ever since the noise started, it has been difficult for me to get some sleep. This has affected my performance at work because i don’t get enough sleep even though I have to wake up early to prepare for work.

I would suggest you get seat leg pads for your chairs so that when you move them they wouldn’t make any noise.

Thank you. I am looking forward for a positive change in the apartment.

Yours Sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work and rest, and suggesting a practical solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the noise to show more depth of thought, but you have fulfilled the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use basic cohesive devices like 'After a busy day' and 'because', though the flow could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. The transition between the problem and the proposed solution is smooth, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'constant noise', 'anticipate', and 'performance'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing, such as 'get seat leg pads' (better: 'furniture pads' or 'felt pads') and 'looking forward for' (should be 'looking forward to'). The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher band scores.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'The sound is usually starts' (incorrect verb form) and 'it sounds like a chairs' (incorrect article usage). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'i don’t' (the pronoun 'I' should be capitalized). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
