Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Mr. Bisht,
I am writing to complain about the noise that comes up frequently for the last few weeks. I am bothered by this situation and would like you to look into it.
First of all, I am well aware that your apartment is undergoing renovations at the moment. However, the noise keeps going even after 11 p.m. The city's bylaws explicitly mention that loud noise is not allowed from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. and on weekends.
Unfortunately, I cannot sleep properly at night due to the ongoing renovations in your apartment. I am a nurse at the hospital and my job requires me to have a proper rest before my morning shifts, which start at 6 a.m. As a result, for the last days I have been experiencing constant fatigue due to sleepless nights.
I believe I am not the only one affected as other residents complained about the same problem. Therefore, I suggest you to reconsider the renovations work hours and start following city bylaws.
Kind regards,
Elena

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly describe the situation regarding the noise from renovations, explain the negative impact on your rest as a nurse, and provide a concrete solution by suggesting the neighbour follow city bylaws. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, meeting all requirements of the prompt effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', 'As a result', and 'Therefore' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent, making the letter easy to read and understand.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task. Phrases like 'undergoing renovations', 'explicitly mention', 'constant fatigue', and 'reconsider the renovations work hours' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it lacks some of the more sophisticated or idiomatic collocations that would push the score into the 8.0+ range. However, the language is natural and there are no errors in word choice that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I am a nurse at the hospital and my job requires me to have a proper rest before my morning shifts, which start at 6 a.m.' shows good control over complex sentence construction. There are very few grammatical errors; however, there is a minor slip in 'I suggest you to reconsider', which should be 'I suggest that you reconsider' or 'I suggest reconsidering'. Overall, the majority of your sentences are error-free.
