Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbour,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this email to discuss my concern regarding noise issues from your apartment.

Firstly, I would like to address the situation that i am facing currently due to the noise. As I am noticing from a few days loud noise of music in tonight comes from your house and moving the furniture, which is inconvenient for me. As you know I have to go on work early morning.

Secondly, there are various reasons why this creates issue for me. One of them is sleep distrubance because of noise cannot sleep properly. Another one is that sometimes i have a lot of work to complete for my business which leads to distract my concentration.

Lastly, I would request you please tackle these problems as soon as possible.

If I were in your position, I highly consider this, and looking forward to your response.

Thank you for your time and understanding.

Best regards,

Raman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of why the noise is a problem is repetitive, focusing mainly on sleep and work concentration without much elaboration. While the task is fulfilled, the ideas could be more fully extended to reach a higher band. The structure is clear, and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent to the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' helps to guide the reader through the points. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For example, the transition between the description of the noise and the impact could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. Overall, the message is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their message clearly. There are some attempts at more specific vocabulary, such as 'inconvenient' and 'distrubance' (though misspelled). However, the range is somewhat limited, and there are instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'go on work' instead of 'go to work' and 'tackle these problems' which is slightly unnatural in this context. To improve, the student should focus on more precise collocations and ensure spelling accuracy for common words like 'disturbance'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'i am noticing from a few days loud noise' (incorrect preposition and word order) and 'leads to distract my concentration' (incorrect verb form). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and capitalization errors, such as the lowercase 'i'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. The student demonstrates an attempt at complex structures, such as the conditional 'If I were in your position', which is a positive feature.
