IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You live in a small apartment building. You are frequently bothered by noise from your upstairs neighbour's apartment.

Write a letter to your neighbour. In your letter
• describe the situation.
• explain why it is a problem for you.
• suggest a solution.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Seema,

I am writing this letter to bring your attention to the excessive noise coming from your apartment, particularly late nights. I noticed, during the late evening, a loud noise was coming from your apartment. I always get disturbed by these noises, as I need to wake up early for my work.

This has become a major issue for me because I am not able to sleep properly due to the several disturbances. There could be either a TV noise or furniture moved from one place to another that disturbs my sleep, and I am not able to wake up early.

I would like you to reduce the volume of the TV or noises coming from your apartment, especially during late nights, and would like to know in advance if any guests are coming so that I can already prepare for the situation.

Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope I will not hear the loud noises from the apartment.

Yours sincerely,

Name

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the impact of the noise; for instance, mentioning the specific effect on your productivity or health would add more depth to your argument. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure, with each paragraph focusing on a specific aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the proposed solution. You use basic cohesive devices like 'This has become' and 'I would like you to' to link your thoughts. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words or transition phrases to connect your sentences more fluidly, as some transitions currently feel a bit repetitive or mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'excessive noise', 'disturbances', and 'consideration'. The word choice is generally accurate and appropriate for the context. However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks variety. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common synonyms. For example, instead of 'loud noise', you could use 'persistent disturbance' or 'disruptive sounds'. Your spelling is accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of basic sentence structures and your meaning is always clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'particularly late nights' (should be 'particularly during late nights') and 'I hope I will not hear' (which sounds slightly unnatural; 'I hope we can resolve this' would be better). You rely mostly on simple and compound sentences. To improve, try to incorporate a wider range of complex structures, such as conditional sentences (e.g., 'If you could lower the volume, it would greatly improve my sleep quality').
