Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Mr. Brown,
Hope you are well today. By the way I wrote a letter for you to let you know about my situation. Lately, I am bothered by the noise causing from my upstairs neighbour at the apartment. They have been hosting a party for a week now , playing loud rock music until midnight even though we have curfew hours at 10:00 pm. It’s been affecting me badly as I cannot rest and sleep during the night, my Blood pressure is fluctuating. Also, because of restless nights , I’ve been sleepy and feeling exhausted at work and I cannot concentrate well. As you are the owner of the apartment, hoping that you can help me resolve this problem as soon as possible. I also want to suggest that we should be having a rules and regulations on each apartment room so we could be reminded everyday with the do’s and dont’s .
Sincerely,
Ivory

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the tone is slightly inconsistent. You address the letter to 'Mr. Brown' as the owner, but then refer to the noise coming from 'my upstairs neighbour'. This creates confusion as to whether you are writing to the landlord or the neighbour themselves. To improve, ensure the recipient is clearly defined and the tone remains consistent throughout. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized, moving from the introduction to the problem and finally the proposed solution. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is contained in a single block. Using separate paragraphs for the problem description and the proposed solution would significantly improve the flow and readability. Additionally, some cohesive devices are missing or used awkwardly, such as 'By the way I wrote a letter', which feels unnatural. Using more varied transition words would help the ideas connect more smoothly.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly, such as 'fluctuating', 'exhausted', and 'regulations'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'noise causing from' should be 'noise coming from', and 'having a rules and regulations on each apartment room' is slightly awkward phrasing. While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on natural collocations will help improve your lexical precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'Lately, I am bothered' (should be 'have been bothered'), 'we should be having a rules' (should be 'there should be rules'), and 'reminded everyday with the do’s and dont’s'. These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding the core message. To improve, pay closer attention to verb tenses and article usage. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help raise your score.
