Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Johns,

I hope you and your family is doing good and you receive this letter in best of your health.

The purpose of writing this letter is that I want to share my problem with you. Dear John we have been neibours for past five years and we spent good time with each other. But now I am very disturbed by the continuous noise by your kids. It seems they are getting some music classes. As long their interest in music is concerned its a very good thing and I appreciate it. But I will be really grateful if you will arrange some specific hours for their music practice. At night from pm 8pm to 11pm I have to take my online classes, and the noise bothers me a lot. I will be thankful to you if you look into this matter and sort out it ASAP.

Kind Regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining why it is a problem, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although the opening is slightly repetitive. The ideas are relevant and clearly stated, though they could be developed with more detail to reach a higher band. For instance, the impact of the noise on your online classes is a good point, but it could be expanded to explain the nature of the work or the specific frustration caused. Overall, the task requirements are fully addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized, moving from a friendly opening to the problem and finally the proposed solution. However, the paragraphing is insufficient; the entire body of the letter is presented as a single block of text. Using clear paragraph breaks between the introduction, the problem description, and the proposed solution would significantly improve the flow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'But' and 'As long as', but the transitions between sentences feel a bit mechanical at times. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some minor errors, such as 'neibours' (spelling) and 'getting some music classes' (collocation), which should be 'taking music lessons'. The range is somewhat limited, relying on basic phrasing. To improve, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary, such as 'disturbed by the persistent noise' instead of 'very disturbed by the continuous noise'. While the current range is sufficient for communication, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I hope you and your family is doing good' (should be 'are doing well') and 'As long their interest' (should be 'As far as their interest is concerned'). Additionally, 'sort out it' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'sort it out'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct phrasal verb placement will help improve your accuracy.
