Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or madam,

I am writing this letter to draw your attention towards noice coming in my apartment through yours.

Every night there is so much noise coming in my apartment as we are living under yours apartment. We were so disturbed from this. We have 2 children they were also disturbed from this. This has become constant now from last 3 days.

As I do night shift I sleep in the morning so whenever I come from job I need some peaceful entertainment to sleep but because of your noices u cannot get proper sleep. I feel tired for whole day. Moreover, my husband is doing work from home he has some online meeting he cannot do that as well.

I would love to suggest that can you please speak slowly or if this will continue again I have to complain to our department manager.

Best regards,

Mahek gauswami

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points: it describes the noise, explains the impact on the writer and their family, and suggests a solution. However, the tone is inconsistent and occasionally aggressive, particularly in the final paragraph where you threaten to complain to the manager. In a formal letter of complaint, it is more effective to maintain a polite, firm, and constructive tone rather than making direct threats. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat limited by the repetitive nature of the complaints regarding sleep and work.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For instance, the transition between the impact on your sleep and your husband's work is abrupt. There is a lack of linking words to connect ideas smoothly (e.g., 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'As a result'). The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'coming in my apartment through yours', which is slightly awkward. Improving the flow between sentences would significantly enhance the readability of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You use the word 'noise' and 'disturbed' repeatedly, which makes the writing feel repetitive. There are also some collocation errors, such as 'doing work from home' (should be 'working from home') and 'doing night shift' (should be 'working the night shift'). The spelling of 'noice' is incorrect. To reach a higher band, you should aim to use more precise vocabulary related to the situation, such as 'excessive noise', 'disruptive', or 'inconsiderate'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'noice coming in my apartment through yours' (preposition error), 'we are living under yours apartment' (incorrect pronoun/article usage), and 'whenever I come from job' (missing article). Additionally, the sentence 'I would love to suggest that can you please speak slowly' is grammatically incorrect; it should be 'I would like to suggest that you please keep the noise down'. These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable throughout the text.
