Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Raj,
I am writing to lodge a complaint regarding constant noise from your apartment. I have been hearing loud music and people singing during late night from your apartment from last few weeks. It is bothering me and my wide.
Firstly, I work as research analyst in consulting firm. My work includes deep concentration and crticial thinking abilities. I have been noticing a trend of parties on every weekend. As a family, we require noise free environment during night. If we are bothred, then it directly impacts our sleep and leads to lack of concentration during work hours. Recently, I received a warning from my company regarding poor performance and this was caused by the noise coming out from your apartment.
I would therefore suggest you to arrange parties in our building’s community hall or somewhere else at your earliest convenience. Should you require any further information, I have enclosed details regarding how to book community hall for personal purpose and would be happy to assist further.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Neel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work and family, and proposing a practical solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal complaint to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear throughout. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how the noise affects your professional performance. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are consistent with the tone; 'Yours faithfully' is typically used when the recipient's name is unknown, whereas 'Yours sincerely' is preferred when addressing someone by name (e.g., 'Dear Raj').
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'If', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that referencing is precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'this was caused by' is slightly vague, and could be improved by explicitly stating 'this decline in performance'. Overall, the flow of information is smooth and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal complaint, such as 'lodge a complaint', 'at your earliest convenience', and 'critical thinking'. There are some minor errors, such as 'noise free environment' (should be hyphenated as 'noise-free') and 'my wide' (a spelling error for 'wife'). Additionally, 'arrange parties' is acceptable, but 'host parties' would be more natural in this context. Despite these minor slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message with precision and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'from last few weeks' (should be 'for the last few weeks') and 'suggest you to arrange' (the verb 'suggest' is usually followed by a gerund or a 'that' clause, e.g., 'I suggest that you arrange'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on preposition usage and verb patterns to ensure greater accuracy in your complex sentences.
