Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mr. Sam,

I hope you are doing well.

I am writing this letter to bring to your attention that I am living in the same apartment as you, particularly downstairs from your apartment, and I am frequently disturbed by the noise from upstairs.

Furthermore, I have my ECE exams next month. That is why I need to focus on my studies. But due to loud noises from the upper floor, I am always distracted and could not focus properly. Initally, I was thinking maybe it is only for one or two days, but I have noticed from the last week everday the same problem.

Finally, I decided to write you about this issue that I am facing. Moreover, If you could lower the music volume that would be so helpful. Also, the dog barking in the evening, if someone could take the dog to park so that your dog is less hyper.

I would appreciate if you could help me out in this situation. If there is anything you need from my side, please do not hesitate to let me know.

I look forward to hearing from you soon at your earliest convenience.

Warm regards,

David

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your studies, and proposing solutions. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the situation well. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail regarding the specific times the noise occurs, which would further develop the ideas and make the request more concrete. Overall, the task requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solutions. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Moreover', and 'Finally' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the flow between the mention of the exams and the noise could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'this issue') is used more naturally would enhance the overall flow and cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'bring to your attention', 'distracted', and 'earliest convenience'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'everyday the same problem' (should be 'every day') and 'less hyper' (which is informal). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the range of less common or more precise collocations that would be expected at a higher band level. Focusing on more sophisticated phrasing would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am living in the same apartment as you, particularly downstairs' (which is slightly awkward) and 'could not focus' (should be 'cannot' or 'have not been able to' for consistency). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and tense issues, such as 'Initally' (spelling) and 'everyday' (should be two words). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. Increasing the variety of complex structures while reducing minor slips will improve your score.
