Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Natasha,
I'm really upset about the noise that bothers me everyday. It has been difficult for me to live peacefully.
I work from home everyday and so need to maintain noise cancellations. During night time I understand but during daytime I hear extremely loud music, instruments playing which has apparently spoiled my peace. As your apartment is upstairs the noise directly reaches to us
My managers have raised this concern about when in meetings they hear the music, yelling, screaming of the background. I am unable to work or concentrate on it. My mother is on bed rest where she needs to have good sleep. Unfortunately she is also stumped with the situation
I understand you love music but you need handle it in peace. Instead loud music try to listen to it on low volume. I hope you understand this frustration and willing to cooperate.
Yours faithfully,
Pinkal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work and your mother, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, although it leans towards being slightly blunt in places. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the situation, the consequences, and the proposed resolution. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more nuanced; for example, instead of just stating the problem, you could elaborate slightly more on the specific types of noise or the duration of the disturbance to provide a more vivid picture for the reader.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'and', 'so', and 'unfortunately' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to create a smoother progression of ideas. For instance, instead of starting sentences with 'My managers...' or 'My mother...', you could use more sophisticated transitions like 'Furthermore' or 'In addition to this' to better connect the impact of the noise on different aspects of your life.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'maintain noise cancellations' and 'stumped with the situation' are slightly unnatural in this context. 'Noise cancellations' usually refers to technology, not a state of quiet, and 'stumped' is typically used for being confused by a puzzle rather than being distressed by a situation. Focusing on more precise collocations will help improve your score. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more idiomatic or precise expressions would demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'yelling, screaming of the background' (which should be 'yelling and screaming in the background') and 'need handle it' (which should be 'need to handle it'). Additionally, 'on bed rest where she needs to have good sleep' is slightly awkward; 'on bed rest and requires a quiet environment' would be more natural. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions to enhance accuracy.
