Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Mr Brown,
I am writing to complain to you about the constant noise that comes from your apartment upstairs.
It has been a few weeks since I started hearing the noise coming from the construction taking place in your place. There is frequent buzzing of a drill machine, and the sound of a hammer on the wall is pain in the ears.
Moreover, I have a final exam at the end of this month. I have been preparing for my exam for the last two months, but this noise has really affected my studies recently. I tried to ignore these distractions, but I have lost focus due to headaches and sleeplessness.
That being said, I suggest that you complete the construction as soon as possible. However, you can ask the construction company to come during the daytime when I am at my university. It would be appreciated if there were no construction on weekends. It will help me concentrate on my studies.
I hope that you will pay attention to my suggestions and take action promptly.
Best Regards,
Alex

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly describe the situation regarding the construction noise, explain the negative impact on your exam preparation, and propose a reasonable solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance throughout. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central focus, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'That being said', and 'However' to link your ideas effectively. The progression of information is smooth, moving from the problem to the impact and finally to the suggested solution. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your message clearly. Phrases like 'constant noise', 'frequent buzzing', and 'take action promptly' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, it lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated collocations that would push the score into the higher bands. However, there are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is natural and fits the formal tone of the letter well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with good control. For example, 'I have been preparing for my exam for the last two months, but this noise has really affected my studies recently' is a well-constructed compound-complex sentence. There are very few grammatical errors; the sentence 'the sound of a hammer on the wall is pain in the ears' is slightly awkward and would be better phrased as 'is painful' or 'is a nuisance'. Overall, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is accurate.
