Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sim,

I write this letter to inform you that I live in suite #203 under your apartment #303. I don't have any personal rivalry with you. But there are a lot of utensils, football bang, and loud music sound come from your unit at unexpected time. Sometime at night your children ran on floor and shout very loud.

In these days I am working from home and when I tried to focus on my office work unfortunately these noises interrupt me. Thus I do not concentrate on my office work. Additionally, my mother who is a heart patient need more rest at the age of 67. But she also bothered due to loud music's bass.

I think if you wanna play music then please keep the sound and bass at low volume so me and my family do not disturb from it. Secondly, please keep an eye on your children and tell them in a good way to not bang ball on floor. If they want to play there is one garden in our society where they can play it.

Thank you so much for attention to this matter.

Kind regards

Daman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work and your mother's health, and suggesting a practical solution. The tone is appropriate for a neighbourly request, remaining polite despite the frustration. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the prompt. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more formal or standard for a letter, and avoid minor inaccuracies in describing the situation, such as 'football bang', which is slightly unclear. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is fully functional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each serving a specific purpose. There is a clear progression of ideas from the problem to the impact and finally the solution. You use some cohesive devices like 'Additionally' and 'Secondly' to link your points. However, the flow is occasionally interrupted by slightly awkward phrasing, such as 'In these days I am working from home'. Improving the use of transition words and ensuring smoother sentence-to-sentence connections would enhance the overall coherence. The paragraphing is effective and helps the reader follow your argument easily.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. You use some specific terms like 'heart patient' and 'unexpected time'. However, there are some inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'football bang' instead of 'banging a ball' and 'do not disturb from it' instead of 'are not disturbed by it'. These errors do not impede communication but indicate a need for more precise vocabulary. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and phrasal verbs related to daily life and complaints.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'my mother... need more rest', 'children ran on floor', 'do not disturb from it'). Some sentences are slightly fragmented or lack necessary articles. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your point, they are noticeable. Increasing your control over basic grammar and ensuring consistent tense usage will help you achieve a higher score.
