Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Laila,
I hope you are doing great. I am writing to express my problem due to continue noise coming from your apartment.
My name is Parminder Singh and I,m currently living in 155 Dorval Avenue and for your information your apartment is right above my apartment. However, as you know our building was very old and insulation between apartments are not fully insulated. Due to this, there is frequent noise coming from your apartment due to loud music system and late night parties. It is very difficult for me to get enough sleep.
My college exams are coming soon and I have to practise a lot to achieve high grades, but due to a lack of sleep, I cannot concentrate on my studies and feeling drowsy at college. In addition, I also find my self less productive during the days.
I would appreciate it if you could turn down the volume of your music system particulary after 8 pm so I can get enough sleep and focus on my studies. Moreover, you can also use club house for late night parties which is free for everyone. I believe we can solve this issue in positive way.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.
Best regards,
Parm

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the explanation of how the noise affects your studies and productivity. The letter is clearly structured, and the purpose is evident from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are consistently formal or semi-formal in tone, and avoid minor inaccuracies in the description of the building's physical state.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the introduction of the problem to its consequences and finally to a proposed solution. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Due to this', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' are used effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall flow is easy to follow. The use of referencing is generally clear, contributing to a coherent piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'insulation', 'productive', and 'consideration'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'continue noise' (should be 'continuous noise') and 'my self' (should be 'myself'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, it lacks the sophistication or precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and ensuring correct word forms will help improve this score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I,m' (punctuation error), 'insulation... are not' (subject-verb agreement), and 'feeling drowsy' (missing subject 'I am'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will also be beneficial.
