Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr James,
I am Shafi Hasan Jamil, the tenant of Apartment No. 4, which is on the third floor of the building. I am writing to complain about the noise coming from the Apartment No. 5, which is directly above my flat.
The new neighbor has been living there since last month. At first, everything was going well, but since the last week, they have been having guests almost every day. They have been playing music till late night, in addition to that I think they also dance keeping their shoes on. As a result there has been unbearable noise.
This problem is particularly affecting my children because they have to go to the school in the early morning. Sleeping with these constant noise is difficult. Moreover, this is hampering my peaceful stay after a long working day.
I would be very grateful if you look into this matter. Please request them to stop music and dancing after 10pm.
Yours sincerely
Jamil

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the situation, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, and the purpose is clear from the outset. The ideas are relevant and logically developed. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific details about the noise (e.g., the specific times or the nature of the music) to further extend the ideas, but overall, the task requirements are fully met.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is well-organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'in addition to that', 'as a result', and 'moreover' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural and less reliant on standard connectors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'unbearable noise', 'hampering', and 'look into this matter'. The language is generally natural and appropriate for the context. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication. To achieve a higher score, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations, such as 'persistent disturbance' instead of 'unbearable noise' or 'disrupting my sleep' instead of 'hampering my peaceful stay'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'go to the school' (should be 'go to school') and 'sleeping with these constant noise' (should be 'this constant noise'). These errors are infrequent and do not cause any difficulty for the reader. To improve, focus on article usage and subject-verb agreement to ensure your writing is consistently accurate.
