Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Andrew,

I am writing you to bring a rather pressing matter to your attention regarding the frequent noise emanting from your apartment. Since our building has relatively thin floors, sound travels quite easily between our respective living spaces.

Recently, there has been a persistent disturbance late at night, specifically involving heavy footsteps and the sound of objects dropping onto the floor well past 11PM. This ongoing disruption has become a significant issue for me, as the noise occurs directly above my bedroom. Consequently, my sleep is severely compromised, leaving me completely exhausted and struggling to concentrate during my demanding morning work shifts.

To resolve this amicably, I was wondering if you could kindly restrict heavy activities or moving furniture to earlier hours in the evening. Alternatively, laying down a thick area rug could help muffle the impact significantly.

Thank you for your time, cooperation, and understanding.

Warm regards,

Prapti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter fully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly describe the situation (noise from the apartment), explain the impact on your sleep and work performance, and provide two practical solutions (restricting hours or using a rug). The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour—polite, firm, and constructive. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body paragraph details the problem and its consequences, and the final paragraph offers solutions. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Consequently', 'Alternatively', and 'Regarding', which help the reader follow your argument without difficulty. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the message.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary that is well-suited to the context of a formal complaint. Phrases such as 'pressing matter', 'severely compromised', and 'amicably' show a sophisticated command of language. There is one minor spelling error ('emanting' should be 'emanating'), but this is a rare slip and does not impede communication. Your word choices are precise and help convey the seriousness of the situation effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writing displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as the participial phrase 'leaving me completely exhausted' and the conditional structure 'if you could kindly restrict...'. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control over verb tenses and sentence construction is consistent, reflecting a strong grasp of English grammar.
