Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Smith,
I am writing this letter to share my dissatisfaction regarding loud music at night times which has persistently made my life harder.
It is been a week now, since then, I have been listening beat music across the apartment which has been pounding on our hearts throughout the night. Sometimes, it gets lighter and then suddenly it turns louder and louder.
This situation has been worsening my work-life balance as I am not being able to concentrate at work and I had my examination for my part-time course next week. Honestly, the main reason is I could not able to sleep properly and quietly which not only makes my cycle improper, but also I cannot even focus on studies especially as it is on the top of our apartment.
I would recommend you to please abide by the rules maintained by our house committee to not do any sort of parties, or any event after 9:00PM in your home. Additionally, if possible, could you please install sound proof walls for your convenience as that would be helpful?
Best regards,
Navjeet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your work and studies, and suggesting a solution. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal complaint to a neighbour, though it occasionally leans towards being overly demanding. The ideas are relevant and clearly presented, covering the situation, the personal impact, and the proposed solutions. To reach a higher band, ensure that the tone remains consistently polite yet firm, as some phrasing like 'abide by the rules' can sound slightly aggressive. Overall, the task requirements are fully met with clear development of ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each serving a clear purpose. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'not only... but also' to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. For example, the transition 'It is been a week now, since then, I have been listening...' is a bit clunky and could be smoothed out for better flow. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the problem from the proposed solution, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. Improving the variety of linking words would further enhance the cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'dissatisfaction', 'persistently', and 'concentrate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'beat music' (likely meaning 'loud music' or 'heavy bass') and 'cycle improper' (which is unclear). The phrase 'pounding on our hearts' is a bit dramatic and not a standard collocation in this context. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and naturalness required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'It is been a week' (should be 'It has been a week'), 'I am not being able to' (should be 'I am unable to'), and 'I could not able to' (should be 'I am unable to' or 'I could not'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences will also help elevate your score.
