Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Mr. Singh,

I hope you’re doing well. I am writing to discuss an issue that causing me some difficulty recently. Over the past few weeks, I have frequently heard loud noises coming from your apartment, particularly late in the evening. The noise often includes heavy footsteps, loud music and moving furniture.

Unfortunately, this has become a problem for me because I work early in the morning and need a good night’s sleep. The noise often continues past night, making it difficult for me to rest properly. As a result, I have feeling tired and less productive during the day.

I understand that apartment living can sometimes lead to unavoidable noise. However, I would appreciate if you could try to lower the noise level during late night hours. Perhaps using rugs on floor, keeping music volume level low and avoiding moving furniture late at night could help reduce the disturbance.

I would be grateful for your understanding and cooperation. I hope we can find a solution that is comfortable to both of us.

Your sincerely,

Neel Mistry.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact on your sleep and productivity, and suggesting practical solutions. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter is well-organised with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You have used cohesive devices such as 'However', 'As a result', and 'In addition' effectively to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure is coherent and easy to navigate.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary suitable for this task, such as 'unavoidable', 'disturbance', and 'cooperation'. There are a few minor inaccuracies, such as 'I have feeling tired' (should be 'I have been feeling') and 'comfortable to both of us' (should be 'comfortable for both of us'). However, these errors do not impede communication and you successfully use a variety of relevant terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. While the majority of your sentences are clear, there are a few grammatical slips, such as 'an issue that causing' (should be 'an issue that is causing') and 'using rugs on floor' (should be 'using rugs on the floor'). Despite these occasional errors, your control of grammar is generally good and does not hinder the reader's understanding.
