Dear _________,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Mark,

I hope you are well. I am writing to you concerning the disturbance caused by loud music you play daily at night.

Let me explain my situation, I have to wake up early morning for my University classes but I am unable to get a good nights sleep owning to the loud incessant music that you play late at night time. This really makes it difficult for me to sleep timely and it has been a while since I have been sleep deprived in classes. Therefore, this is putting a significant strain on my education.

I request that you lower the music volume from 10 pm onwards especially on weekdays as I get to bed around that time. Additionally we both can write a letter to request the landlord for installation of sound proofing windows so that both of us are able to live without disturbance.

Thank you for your corporation.

Yours faithfully,

Alana Morris

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: the situation is described, the impact on your studies is explained, and a constructive solution is proposed. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on the specific nature of the noise or provide a more personal touch to the opening or closing to enhance the communicative quality of the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Additionally', and 'concerning' to link ideas effectively. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The paragraphing is appropriate for a letter format. To improve further, ensure that the transition between the problem description and the proposed solution feels slightly more natural, perhaps by using a more sophisticated linking phrase.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, such as 'disturbance', 'incessant', and 'sleep deprived'. These choices are precise and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor word-choice errors, such as 'sleep timely' (which should be 'sleep at a reasonable hour') and 'corporation' (which should be 'cooperation'). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading regarding collocations and spelling. Expanding your range of idiomatic expressions or more precise verbs would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in the second paragraph. However, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I have to wake up early morning' (missing 'in the') and 'I have been sleep deprived' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). The punctuation is generally accurate, though there is a comma splice in the second paragraph ('Let me explain my situation, I have to...'). Focusing on sentence variety and correcting minor prepositional errors will help you achieve a higher band.
