Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Neighbor,

Hope you are doing well. I am writing this email regarding the noise which is bothering me and my entire family.

Firstly, we live in a small building with tiny apartments. Though your house is upstairs but noise is still there, the late night sound from your house is disturbing sleep of me and my other family members.

Furthermore, I and my wife have to go to work and have some important meetings to attend early in the morning and my child have school too, she can not sleep at night peacefully and feels irritated all the remaining day.

Finally, I recommend you to slow the volume after 10 PM. So that we can sleep without any disturbance. And we are comfortable on weekends because we are not at home on those days or if we are at home we also awake till late. So we can adjust once or twice but not everyday.

Thank you for paying attention to this matter. Hope you will understand.

Kind regards,

Aditi Gupta

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining a polite yet firm stance. The ideas are relevant and clearly developed, such as the specific impact on your child's schooling and your own work meetings. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing are more formal or standard for a letter, and avoid minor inconsistencies in the explanation of the situation, such as the slightly confusing phrasing regarding your weekend schedule.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Furthermore', and 'Finally' to link your points. However, the connection between sentences could be smoother; for instance, the transition between the noise issue and the weekend schedule is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing (e.g., 'your house', 'that matter') is consistently clear would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'disturbing sleep' and 'paying attention to this matter' are functional and appropriate. However, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and repetitive. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or less common lexical items to describe the noise (e.g., 'persistent thumping' or 'excessive volume') and the impact it has on your daily life. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally accurate enough to avoid any misunderstanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'Though your house is upstairs but noise is still there' (incorrect use of 'though' with 'but') and 'my child have school' (subject-verb agreement error). Additionally, 'I and my wife' should be 'My wife and I'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of conjunctions will significantly improve your accuracy.
