Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Harsh,

I am writing this letter to address you about the thing bothering me a lot is the noise comming from your side of the building.

As we share the same apartment in our small building. I get lot's of loud noise coming in my apartment. Noise such as walking heavy on the floor's and also loud television noise. As specialy at the night time as I work early in the morning.

I would like too suggest you the solution to the problem by reducing the volume of television by the night time after, 8 p.m and a slow conversation and not heavy walking at the night time speicaly. I hope you will look into my problem's and take a note on it and let your family members let know about the problem as well.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

You have addressed all three bullet points: describing the noise, explaining the impact, and suggesting a solution. However, the response is under the 150-word minimum requirement, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. The ideas are presented clearly, but they lack the necessary development and extension required for a higher band. To improve, you should expand on the impact of the noise on your daily life and provide more specific details regarding your proposed solutions to ensure the letter is sufficiently developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. However, the use of cohesive devices is quite limited and sometimes mechanical. For example, the transition between the problem and the solution is abrupt. Paragraphing is present, but the sentences within the paragraphs could be linked more effectively using a wider range of transition words (e.g., 'consequently', 'furthermore', 'in addition'). The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is somewhat choppy due to the short, simple sentence structures used throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is functional but basic. You rely on simple terms like 'loud noise' and 'thing bothering me'. There are also several errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'comming' instead of 'coming', 'lot's' instead of 'lots', and 'specialy' instead of 'especially'. To reach a higher band, you need to use a wider range of vocabulary and ensure accurate spelling. Incorporating more precise collocations, such as 'persistent disturbance' or 'excessive volume', would demonstrate a better command of the language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response consists mostly of simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are issues with subject-verb agreement, such as 'I get lot's of loud noise', and incorrect preposition usage, such as 'at the night time' instead of 'at night'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the misuse of apostrophes (e.g., 'floor's', 'problem's'). While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors and the lack of complex sentence structures limit the score. You should focus on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for common grammatical slips.
