Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all bullet points of the General Training writing task. The letter clearly describes the situation ('frequent noise problems from your suite'), explains why it is a problem ('disturb my children', mother has heart issues and needs rest), and suggests a practical solution ('use rugs and mats'). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a neighbour, maintaining politeness while firmly addressing the grievance. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently extended, fulfilling the requirements for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Minor gaps in the depth of development prevent a higher score, but all aspects of the prompt are satisfactorily managed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with logical sequencing of points. The candidate moves naturally from introducing the problem to detailing its impacts and finally offering solutions. Paragraphing is used, though paragraph divisions could be more balanced (the second paragraph is notably longer and contains multiple shifts in focus). Cohesive devices are somewhat mechanical and repetitive (e.g., 'Sometimes', 'Even', 'Everyday', 'So'), reflecting Band 6 characteristics. Referencing is mostly clear, though occasional abrupt transitions between sentences detract from a smoother flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common phrasing such as 'work from home', 'heart issue', and 'humble request'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'houting' instead of shouting, 'foot sounds' and 'foot bang sound' instead of footsteps or stomping, and 'listen bass sound' instead of hearing heavy bass. Spelling is generally acceptable apart from the typo 'houting'. The lexical range is minimally sufficient to convey the message, fitting the Band 5.5 to 6.0 profile.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including tense and fragment issues such as 'Sometimes when I do my work from home and attend meetings. But, due to foot noises...' which leaves a dependent clause dangling. Other errors include 'This disturb' (subject-verb agreement), 'they do not concentrate in their studies' (preposition error), 'she would like to sleep at afternoon' (preposition error), and 'music... it start' (tense agreement). These errors occasionally cause slight hesitation for the reader, aligning with Band 5.5.
