Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Reet,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to talk to you about a small problem that has been affecting me. Actually, I am bothered by a lot of noise from you, and it is causing me problems.
It's a problem for me for one major reason. The reason is that I have my exams the following week, and I can not focus on my studies, which affects my studies. You also play loud music till 12. Due to this, it also affects my sleep. So I want to concentrate on my studies, but I cannot do so because of this issue.
I know that you want to enjoy yourself with your friends and family members, but my exams are near, and they take up to a month. I want to request that you keep the loud music down for just one week and make less noise. I hope you can understand my situation.
Best wishes,
Komal

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. The situation is clearly described (noise coming from the upstairs neighbour), the problem is explained (impending exams and sleep disturbance due to loud music playing until midnight), and a clear and reasonable solution is suggested (asking the neighbour to keep the volume down for one week). The tone is appropriately polite and conversational for a general letter. The ideas are relevant and fully developed to fulfill the purpose of the letter, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression. The response is appropriately paragraphed, separating the greeting, introduction, problem description, proposed solution, and sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Actually', 'Due to this', and 'I know that' are used reasonably well to guide the reader through the text, although some transitions feel slightly repetitive. Overall, the flow is coherent and natural, easily meeting the requirements for a Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate and sufficiently conveys the writer's message. Expressions such as 'affecting me', 'concentrate on my studies', and 'understand my situation' are clear and appropriate. However, the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive, particularly with phrases like 'affecting my studies' and 'problem for me'. There is limited use of less common or idiomatic lexical items. Thus, the lexical resource is characteristic of a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'The reason is that I have my exams the following week, and I can not focus on my studies...' and 'I know that you want to enjoy yourself with your friends...'. Grammar and punctuation are generally well controlled with only minor issues, such as spacing in 'can not' and slight redundancies. The majority of sentences are grammatically accurate and communication is never impeded. This performance aligns well with a Band 7.0.
