Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the prompt. Lovepreet begins by describing the situation clearly, stating that loud noise from televisions and video games coming from upstairs is bothering them in the evening. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the impact of the noise is explained well by mentioning upcoming exams and the need for adequate sleep as a full-time student. Furthermore, a constructive and reasonable solution is provided at the end, suggesting the volume be lowered or that loud activities finish before 7 pm. The tone is polite and appropriate for a general correspondence to a neighbour. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter exhibits a coherent overall arrangement and the writer's intent is understandable throughout. However, the use of paragraphing and cohesive devices is quite basic. The response is essentially structured into one large opening segment, a long central paragraph, and a closing proposal, but punctuation and sentence boundaries are sometimes faulty, such as comma splices in phrases like 'doing well, i am writing' and 'my university , this is the only time'. Cohesive links between ideas are minimal, relying mostly on basic conjunctions like 'and' or 'because'. While the overall message flows logically from problem to explanation to solution, the mechanical errors in punctuation prevent it from reaching a higher band. This performance aligns well with band 6.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday concepts such as 'full time student', 'focus on my studies', and 'sleep cycle'. There are, however, several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'borther' instead of 'bother', 'appriciate' instead of 'appreciate', and awkward phrasing like 'audio video gadget'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede overall communication. The vocabulary is generally functional rather than sophisticated, featuring repetitive use of common terms. Because the lexical range is sufficient for the task despite frequent spelling slips and simple choices, a band 6.0 is well-deserved.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
Lovepreet demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting multi-clause sentences such as 'As i am a full time student it really hard for me to focus on my studies and my exams held to be in next month.' However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors including missing articles ('it really hard', 'be a sleep'), tense and verb form issues ('exams held to be', 'when i came home' instead of 'come home'), and punctuation errors like run-on sentences and lack of capitalization for the pronoun 'i'. Despite these persistent errors, the meaning remains mostly clear to the reader, fitting the profile of band 5.5 where a limited range of structures and frequent errors occur.
