Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Mr. Taylor
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this to express my concerns about the music sound coming from your appartment.
As you know, I live on a ground floor, when you play music especially at night, my whole appartment starts shaking and it makes me unable to sleep as well as cause mental trauma for me.
I am a full-time medical studend and my examinations are coming soon, but this noise significantly distrubing my sleep and I cannot able to concentrate on my studies, I need at least 8 hours of sleep to work on my full potential.
I don't want you to completely stop playing music because I know different individuals have their own ways to relax after a long day and I think you like to listen music to refresh your brain. However, I would appericate if you avoid playing music after 10 PM or you could install sound proof floorings to cancel the noise.
Thank for your time and consideration. I hope you can understand my situation and assist me to deal with this problem.
Best regards,
Sim.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all bullet points required by the task instructions. You clearly described the situation by mentioning the loud music coming from the upstairs neighbour's apartment. You explained why it is a problem for you, noting your status as a medical student and the impact the noise has on your sleep and ability to concentrate for upcoming examinations. Furthermore, you suggested practical solutions, such as avoiding playing music after 10 PM or installing soundproof flooring. Your tone is appropriately polite for a formal letter of complaint, maintaining a constructive approach throughout. All parts of the prompt are well addressed and fully developed, aligning comfortably with the Band 7 level descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear overarching progression. Each paragraph serves a specific function: introducing the problem, explaining the personal impact, offering reasonable solutions, and providing a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are generally used appropriately, such as 'However' and 'As you know', though paragraphing could be slightly more refined. Referencing is mostly clear, though a few minor mechanical transitions could be smoother. Overall, the structural arrangement creates a coherent and easy-to-follow piece of writing that meets the standards of Band 6.5, rounded to 7.0 for clear logical organisation and effective progression throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary range is generally adequate for this type of task. You successfully employed functional terms related to the situation, such as 'express my concerns', 'relax after a long day', and 'sound proof floorings'. However, there are some noticeable spelling and word choice errors, such as 'appartment' (apartment), 'studend' (student), 'distrubing' (disturbing), and 'appericate' (appreciate). Additionally, phrases like 'music sound' are slightly unnatural. Despite these errors, communication is never impeded, and you attempt some less common lexical items with moderate success, placing your lexical performance solidly at the Band 6 level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures and subordinate clauses, such as 'I don't want you to completely stop playing music because I know different individuals have their own ways to relax...' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'coming from your appartment' (missing article), 'on a ground floor' (should be 'the ground floor'), and 'I cannot able to concentrate' (incorrect auxiliary verb usage). Punctuation is also slightly flawed in places, such as comma splices. These errors occasionally disrupt the flow, but the meaning remains clear, which corresponds well to the Band 6 descriptors.
