Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to address my concern towards the problem causing by the noise from your apartment, as my apartment is exactly below your apartment in the building.

I have observed that you have a family of six people in a two bedroom apartment. Hence, loud foot steps are clearly audible down to my apartment. Moreover, children watching TV at high volume is causing noise pollution to all nearby apartment.

I have been worked as a Department Manager at Walmart for 2 years, recently I have been promoted to the Assistant of Store Manager for an overnight position. Due to this problems, I can not able to sleep properly and that is directly affecting my productivity at my workplace.

I will suggest to walk cautiously and add on pair of flip-flops to mitigate noise from walking bare feet. And, to instruct children to lower down the volume while watching TV until its audible only in your apartment.

Best,

Jay

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points of the prompt. You clearly described the situation in your opening by explaining that your apartment is located directly below your neighbour's unit. You then explained why this is a problem by detailing the noise from six family members and the disruption to your sleep schedule, specifically connecting it to your job as an Assistant Store Manager. Finally, you provided practical solutions, such as wearing flip-flops and lowering the television volume. The tone is mostly appropriate for a semi-formal letter, although the salutation "Dear Sir or Madam" is slightly too formal when writing to a known neighbour. Overall, the ideas are well-developed and fulfil the task requirements, aligning closely with the Band 7 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your letter has a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Paragraphs are used appropriately to separate different points, starting with the description of the situation, moving to the personal impact, and concluding with the suggested solutions. Cohesive devices such as "Moreover" and "Due to this problems" are used to connect ideas, although referencing is occasionally faulty, as seen in "Due to this problems" (should be "these problems"). Paragraphing is logical, and the flow of information is easy to follow from the greeting to the sign-off, which fully justifies a Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as "observe," "audible," "mitigate," and "productivity." However, there are some word-choice and collocation errors, such as "problem causing by" instead of "problem caused by," and "lower down the volume" rather than simply "lower the volume" or "turn down the volume." While you attempt less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent you from reaching a higher band. Nevertheless, the meaning remains clear throughout, supporting a Band 6.0 rating.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional and causal structures ("Due to this problems, I can not able to sleep properly..."). However, there are several noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including "I have been worked" (should be "I have been working"), "can not able to" (should be "cannot be able to" or simply "cannot"), and "add on pair of flip-flops" (should be "wear a pair of flip-flops"). Punctuation is generally fine, but the grammatical mistakes occur frequently enough to impede complete accuracy, placing this response solidly in the Band 6.0 category.
