Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir,
I am a resident of the apartment building you reside in. I have been meaning to talk about a certain situation that has been causing nuisance among our building. Recently, i have been noticing that there is quite a lot of disturbance and noise coming from your apartment thag causes me a lack of sleep and losing my focus while working.
Being a full time working person, i wake up early in the morning and go to work. Spending the entire day there makes me want to come home to a peaceful environment where i could relax and sleep to get ready for the next day. However, as soon as i come home, there are loud noise that comes from your apartment of people chattering as well as loud music which really discomforts me. Initially, i ignored this but now as a result of my lack of sleep, i have been unable to wake up on time for my work and i am not able to complete my due work. Subsequently, i have been suffering from frequent headaches now that is causing my distress. It is detrimental for my health and for others too who would be disturbed like me because of this nuisance.
I would like you to find a possible solution for this issue. My suggestion is that you should get sound proof walls that would restrict the noose from going outside. You can also buy noise cancelling headphones if you like listening to loud music so you would not have to compromise on that.
Hope you will understand and work on this issue as it would be really appreciated. Kind regards

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The writer covers all parts of the prompt well. The letter begins by describing the situation with the noisy neighbour ('there is quite a lot of disturbance and noise coming from your apartment'). It then clearly explains why it is a problem for the writer, citing lost sleep, lack of focus, and physical symptoms like frequent headaches. Finally, appropriate solutions are suggested, including getting soundproof walls or noise-cancelling headphones. The tone is semi-formal and polite, suitable for a letter of complaint to a neighbour. All bullet points are fully addressed and developed, fulfilling the requirements for a Band 7.0 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas across paragraphs. The introduction identifies the writer and the issue, the second paragraph elaborates on the personal impact of the problem, and the final paragraph proposes solutions. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'However', 'Initially', 'and 'Subsequently'. However, paragraphing could be improved by separating the problem description from its specific impacts, and referencing is occasionally slightly loose ('causing nuisance among our building'). Nevertheless, the logical organisation and clear flow support a Band 6.5 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, with some attempts at less common phrasing such as 'peaceful environment', 'frequent headaches', and 'detrimental for my health'. There are, however, some lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'causing nuisance among our building' instead of 'in our building', 'thag' (typographical error for 'that'), and 'sound proof walls' (soundproof). Despite these occasional slips and spelling mistakes, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly, corresponding to a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('that causes me a lack of sleep') and participial phrases ('Spending the entire day there makes me want...'). There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including lowercase 'i', missing articles ('loud noise that comes' instead of 'loud noises come'), and preposition errors ('distress' rather than 'distress'). Punctuation around sentence boundaries also needs attention. Because the errors are noticeable but rarely impede communication, this aligns with a Band 6.0.
