Dear _________,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Neighbour,
I hope you doing well. I am writing to let you know about the noise coming from your apartment upstairs.
Recently, I have been hearing loud footsteps, furniture being moved, and music late night, especially after 10 p.m.
This has become a problem for me because I work early in the morning and need enough sleep to concentrate during the day. However, the noise often wakes me up or makes it difficult for me to fall asleep. It is also affecting my ability to relax in the evenings after work.
I understand that apartment buildings can be noisy sometimes, and I respect your lifestyle. However, I would be grateful if you could try to reduce the noise during late hours. For example, you would lower the volume of music, avoid moving heavy furniture at night, or place rugs on the floor to reduce footsteps.
I would really appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request.
Yours faithfully,
raja

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task instructions. The letter begins appropriately with 'Dear Neighbour,'. The situation is clearly described as noise coming from the upstairs apartment, including loud footsteps, furniture movement, and late-night music. The explanation of why this is a problem is well-articulated, mentioning how it affects sleep for early work and evening relaxation. Furthermore, practical and logical solutions are suggested, such as lowering music volume, avoiding moving heavy furniture at night, and placing rugs on the floor. The tone is polite and appropriate for a letter to a neighbour. All aspects of the task are fully addressed, warranting a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is well-organized with a clear, logical progression from describing the problem to explaining its impact, and finally offering constructive solutions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas, such as the description of the noise in one paragraph, the personal impact in the next, and the proposed solutions subsequently. Cohesive devices are used effectively and naturally, for example, phrases like 'This has become a problem for me because' and 'However, I would be grateful if you could'. The letter flows smoothly from start to finish, ensuring the reader easily follows the writer's train of thought.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Words and phrases such as 'concentrate', 'relax in the evenings', 'lifestyle', and 'cooperation' are used accurately. There is a successful attempt to use less common functional phrases like 'respect your lifestyle' and 'take the time to consider my request'. Minor spelling or word choice errors are absent, though the vocabulary remains relatively standard rather than highly sophisticated. The lexical resource is fully sufficient to communicate the message precisely and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student employs a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I understand that apartment buildings can be noisy sometimes, and I respect your lifestyle' and 'For example, you would lower the volume of music, avoid moving heavy furniture at night...'. However, there is a minor grammatical error in the second sentence where the auxiliary verb is missing ('I hope you doing well' instead of 'I hope you are doing well'). Despite this minor slip, the majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout the response.
