Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

As you may know that, I am your neighbour from the downstaris apartment number 102 and we have been living in the same neighbourhood from the past 7 years and we both are very familiar with each other that is the reason i want to share something with you.

From the past couple of weeks , I am frequently bothered by several noises from your apartment specially in the night time and that is really giving me a hard time because every morning I have to wake up very early for my work like 4.00 am , As well as my job is Data Analyst for that i really need to concentrate on my work but due to noises I am not getting enough sleep and that affects my performance.

I am requesting you to not to make noises during the 9.00 pm to 3.00 am after that you can make noises as much as you want because I leave my house at 3.30 am and I am not in the house till 5.00pm.

I hope you undersatnd my situation and try to not to make noises.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Yours lovingly,

Aiden

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student covers all three bullet points required by the prompt successfully. The situation is described as frequent noises from the upstairs apartment, the impact is explained clearly through the negative effect on sleep and work performance as a Data Analyst needing high concentration, and a concrete solution is proposed by suggesting quiet hours. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter to a neighbour. Although the letter contains some repetitive phrasing and minor grammatical issues, all requirements of General Training Task 1 are fully addressed with clear purpose and relevant ideas. This corresponds to a Band 6.5, rounded to Band 7.0 for satisfying all prompt bullets effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a clear logical organisation and progression from greeting to situation description, impact, solution, and sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the background, the problem, and the proposed solution. However, the overarching structure suffers from run-on sentences and overly long paragraphs that string multiple clauses together using commas instead of full stops, such as the second paragraph. Cohesive devices are functional but somewhat repetitive. Referencing is generally clear, and the opening and closing conventions are appropriate for a letter. This performance fits the Band 6 descriptor well due to mechanical or faulty cohesion in longer sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their situation clearly. There are attempts at less common lexical items and collocations, such as "data analyst", "frequently bothered", and "co-operation". However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as writing "downstaris" instead of downstairs, "from the past 7 years" instead of for the past 7 years, and "several noises" instead of various noises or loud sounds. Despite these inaccuracies, communication is never impeded. The range of vocabulary is sufficient for the task requirements, aligning with a Band 6 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar. However, the writing is heavily impacted by run-on sentences, particularly in the second paragraph, where multiple distinct ideas are joined incorrectly by commas (comma splices), such as in "...for my work like 4.00 am , As well as my job is Data Analyst for that i really need to concentrate...". There are also tense and preposition errors, such as "From the past couple of weeks" instead of For the past couple of weeks, and "undersatnd". While there are error-free clauses, the frequency of punctuation and structural control errors places this firmly in the Band 5.5 to 6.0 range, deserving a Band 6.0.
