Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear John,
I am writing this email to inform you that I am facing several difficulties because of the loud noise from your apartment.
Firstly, due to late-night music, I am unable to get proper sleep, that effect my whole day. Moreover, I work in a retail store; every morning I need to wake up early, but because of your loud noise, I am facing problems such as not getting proper sleep, and the next day I feel tired and lazy.
Secondly, I am looking for a promotion at my job, but every day I feel so tired that effect my productivity. Furthermore, I am scared that if these things continue to happen, it will also affect my health.
I have no problem if you play music during the daytime, because I am not at home at that time. Although rather than playing loud music at night, you can little bit slow down the volume a little bit, so that I do not hear any voice.
I hope you understand my situation and try to work on it, so that next time I do not face this problem.
Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours sincerely,
Sargun

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all three bullet points required by the prompt effectively. The student successfully describes the situation by mentioning the late-night music from the upstairs neighbour's apartment, explains why it is a problem by linking the lack of sleep to tiredness at work and potential health consequences, and suggests a practical solution by asking the neighbour to turn down the volume slightly at night. The purpose of the letter is clear throughout, and the tone is appropriate for addressing a neighbour regarding a sensitive issue. The ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of the task, earning a solid band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as describing the sleep issues, discussing work impacts, and offering a solution. Cohesive devices are generally used to guide the reader through the text, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Furthermore'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally repetitive or mechanical, particularly with the repetitive use of phrases like 'because of your loud noise' and 'that effect my productivity', which slightly disrupts the natural flow of ideas. Overall, the organisation is clear and progression is maintained throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating everyday issues such as 'proper sleep', 'retail store', 'productivity', and 'health'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, but these are accompanied by lexical and grammatical errors, notably confusing verbs and nouns, such as using 'effect' instead of 'affect'. Additionally, phrases like 'do not hear any voice' are slightly unnatural in this context, where 'any noise' would be more appropriate. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over clause structures through sentences like 'I am writing this email to inform you that I am facing several difficulties...' and 'I have no problem if you play music during the daytime...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, such as 'that effect my whole day' instead of 'affect', and 'you can little bit slow down the volume a little bit', which contains redundant phrasing. Punctuation is mostly functional, but some run-on clauses slightly hinder grammatical accuracy. These errors occur regularly but rarely impede overall communication.
