Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Neighbour,
I hope you're doing well.
I am writing this letter to inform you about the situation that I am currently experiencing. My name is Navdeep and I live on the down stairs. I would like to you know that, since I have shifted to this apartment, I am continously hearing the noise during night time. At first, I thought it would get better as noises were not consistent, but now the situation has become worse. Every night exactly after 9 pm I started hearing loud noises from your apartment. Due to this it has became almost impossible for me to sleep at night.
Furthermore, my health is badly affected by this situation because of lack of sleep. My productivity has drastically reduced. Additonally, I am experiencing severe head ache these days.
Moving ahead, I kindly request you to please look into this matter. Please remember there are other people as well living in the same building. I seriously don't have any issue with whatever you're doing inside your apartment but please make sure your actions are not bothering other people.
I really aprreciate your understanding on this matter.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly described the situation by stating that you live downstairs and are experiencing persistent noises coming from above. You explained why it is a problem by detailing how the nightly disturbances after 9 pm prevent you from sleeping, negatively impact your productivity, and cause severe headaches. Finally, you suggested a sensible solution by politely requesting your neighbour to be more mindful of building noise levels. The tone is appropriate for a semi-formal letter, and the purpose of the communication is achieved effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following a standard correspondence structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as describing the problem, explaining its effects, and proposing a solution. Cohesive devices are used adequately, including transition phrases like 'Furthermore' and 'Additonally'. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the logical progression is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a general task letter, attempting some less common phrases such as 'drastically reduced' and 'severely affected'. However, there are a few noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'down stairs' instead of 'downstairs', 'continously' instead of 'continuously', 'shifted' instead of 'moved', and 'head ache' instead of 'headache'. Additionally, the sign-off is incomplete ('Your f'). Despite these errors, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly without causing major confusion for the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'At first, I thought it would get better as noises were not consistent, but now the situation has become worse.' There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, including 'I would like to you know that', 'since I have shifted to this apartment, I am continously hearing' (tense inconsistency), and 'Every night exactly after 9 pm I started hearing' (tense shift). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but these persistent errors in verb tenses and clause structures mean that simple sentences are often more accurate than complex ones.
